This, along with comparatively lower living expenses in most cities, makes Canada an affordable choice without sacrificing quality. (We will outline costs in a subsequent section.)

• Work During Study: International students in Canada can work 20 hours a week during periods of studies and full-time during holidays. It will help you get work exposure and earn some money while continuing your MS.

• Business & Management (MS/MSc): In addition to the well-known MBA programs, most Canadian universities have Master of Science degrees in Management, Finance, Supply Chain, or specialized areas such as Master of Management Analytics (e.g., at U of T).

• Environmental & Sustainability Studies: Consistent with Canada's mission to be sustainable, the Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, Climate Change, and Sustainability Management programs are favored by students.

• Other Emerging Disciplines: Canadian universities keep refreshing their menus. You can discover the latest specializations like Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, UX/UI Design, Public Policy, Global Health, Media Studies, among others.

• Undergraduate Degree: You need to hold a recognized bachelor's degree (usually 4-year) in a related field. Universities typically seek at least an equivalent GPA of 3.0/4.0 (around 70-75%) during your last two years of studies.

• English Language Proficiency: Since courses are taught in English (outside francophone programs), international students must demonstrate English proficiency. Accepted tests include IELTS and TOEFL (some schools also accept PTE or CAEL). Generally, you’ll need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5-7.0 overall (with no band below 6.0) or a TOEFL iBT score of around 86-100. For example, many programs require IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each section.

• GRE/GMAT (Standardized Tests): The GRE is recommended or optional for most MS degrees in Canada but is required in some competitive degree programs. Some examples include the top Computer Science or Engineering degree programs requesting a GRE, or management-related masters (or an MBA/Master of Management) requesting the GMAT.

• Work Experience (if any): Work experience is not necessary in most technical MS programs. It is good if you have an internship or work experience as it would strengthen your CV and SOP. Some programs (such as MBA or Master of Business Analytics) may prefer or even require 1-2 years of experience.

• Letters of Recommendation (LORs): You will generally require 2-3 recommendation letters. Academic references (teachers who instructed or supervised you) are valued, particularly for research programs. One professional LOR can be added if you have work experience.

• Statement of Purpose (SOP) or Essay: Most MS applications require a Statement of Purpose (also referred to as a letter of intent or personal statement). This is an important section where you describe your reason for pursuing graduate study, your academic/professional background, interests in the discipline, and why you are selecting that university/program.

• Resume/CV: You are supposed to submit an updated CV reflecting your education, projects, publications (if applicable), internships, work experience, skills, and extracurricular activities.

• Passport and Visa Documents: In the case of international students, a valid passport is naturally essential. You don’t need a student visa (study permit) at the time of application to the university, but once admitted, you’ll use the acceptance letter to apply for a study permit. Proof of funds is significant in the visa phase – you need to demonstrate you could pay for tuition and living costs (Canada recently made the proof of financial resources required higher to around $20,000 CAD yearly for living costs outside Quebec plus tuition).

• Research and Shortlist Programs: Determine your preferred field of study and research universities with good programs in that field. Look at aspects such as curriculum, faculty, research facilities, location, and rankings.

• Check Admission Requirements and Deadlines: Check each program's requirements, such as academic requirements, standardized test scores (e.g., IELTS/TOEFL, GRE), letters of recommendation, and application deadlines.

• Prepare Application Documents: Have relevant documents, including transcripts, CV, Statement of Purpose (SOP), and recommendation letters prepared. Customize each program's SOP and proofread everything.

• Take Necessary Tests: Take required standardized tests well before the application deadline to allow sufficient time for test scores to reach programs.

• Submit Online Applications: Fill out online applications for all universities, ensuring that all the necessary documents are uploaded and application fees are made before deadlines.

• Follow Up: Ensure that all application parts, such as recommendation letters, are submitted. Check application status on university portals and prepare for possible interviews.

• Decision Notifications: Wait for admission decisions, which are usually available some weeks to months following application deadlines. Follow the directive on acceptance and other subsequent steps.

• Apply for a Study Permit: After being admitted, apply for a Canadian study permit (student visa) as soon as possible, since processing may take three months.

• Plan Travel and Accommodation: After obtaining your study permit, arrange travel and housing. Consider arriving early to attend orientation sessions and acclimatize to the new environment.

• Eligibility: The graduates from Canadian post-secondary schools that are eligible can get a PGWP. The study program duration has to be 8 months at least. As of February 15, 2024, graduates from two-year less than master's degree programs may become eligible for a three-year-valid PGWP.

• Application Window: Apply within 180 days of receiving your final transcript or official letter declaring program completion.
