Established in 1970, the Athlone Institute of Technology was an educational institution that offered educational facilities to students till 2021. The university campus was situated on University Road in Athlone, Ireland. As soon as the university ceased operations, it was succeeded by the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest.

The college operated with more than 250 staff members, and at any given point in time, it could accommodate over 6,000 students encouraging students worldwide to study in Ireland. The college's motto was 'Connect and Discover,' and it encouraged students to do that. The college had a big campus covering an area of 18 hectares.

Athlone Institute of Technology Highlights

When the Irish Government laid the foundation for the Athlone Institute of Technology in 1970, it placed it under the control of the Vocational Educational Committee. Years later, the institution received more autonomy when the Regional Technical Colleges Act 1992 was passed.  1997, the institution was rechristened as the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). Two years later, the university was given the distinction of being a validation authority and awarding HETAC degrees. 

In the year 2000, Ciarán Ó Catháin was named the institute's president. James Coyle and Dr. David Fenton held this particular post earlier.  The university opened several new schools and institutionalized new branches over the years. In 2001, a School of Humanities was set up as a part of the university. The Hospitality, Tourism, and Leisure Studies building opened in 2003. In 2005, the Midlands Innovation and Research Centre and the Nursing and Health Science building were established.The setting up of the Postgraduate Research Hub in 2010 was an important moment in the history of the Athlone Institute of Technology. After the institute's establishment, it became much easier for research scholars to research various subjects. 

The Athlone Institute of Technology had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rio de Janeiro State University, which is one of the region's most prominent universities. It also signed agreements with another important university, the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. In the later years, it had agreements with Business, the Beijing Union University, and the Capital University of Economics.

The college had several world-class facilities, including the Goldsmith Library. This particular library, which had an extensive collection of books, was named after the famous playwright, novelist, and poet Oliver Goldsmith.The college was very encouraging of students who were inclined towards art or had a keen interest in culture. The institution had a dedicated performance venue in the form of the McCormack Hall, named after the legendary lyric tenor John McCormack.

Athlone Institute of Technology Admissions

An international student who wishes to gain admission to the Athlone Institute of Technology has to start by visiting the institute's official online portal. On the website, they will find an application form. All they need to do is download it and fill it out with the required details. After filling up the form, the student has to submit it. 

Compared to domestic students, the steps an international student has to follow while going through the application process are more elaborate. A student who lives in another country needs to have a valid passport. They also have to work towards procuring a visa to study in Ireland. The passport, which the student has, must be valid for at least 6 months after the completion of the course. 

For as long as it remained operational, the Athlone Institute of Technology maintained its reputation of being an institution that would admit international students in large numbers. Because of its favorable acceptance rate, many students from different countries would apply for courses and programs offered by the Athlone Institute of Technology. 

At the Athlone Institute of Technology, international students were taught courses or programs in English. Because of this, international students who hail from non-English speaking states or countries are expected to have a good command of the language. International students were required to appear for one of the English language proficiency tests. If they scored well in the test they appeared for, they would have a shot at getting a seat in the Athlone Institute of Technology.

Right from the time it was established, the Athlone Institute of Technology stood out as it was one of the first educational institutions to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Students were also given the option of pursuing these courses on a full-time or part-time basis. At any given point in time, more than 6,000 students would be pursuing the different courses offered by the institution.

The Athlone Institute of Technology offers a wide range of educational programs through the different schools operating under it including the School of Engineering, Department of Lifelong Learning, School of Science, and Business School. 

Some of the postgraduate courses that were offered at the Athlone Institute of Technology were MA in Creative Practice, MA in Social Work, MSc in Bioprocessing Science, MEng in Geotechnical Engineering with Structural Engineering, MEng in Structural Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering, MA in Creative Practice, MSc in Built Environment Regulation, MSc in Applied Marine Conservation, MSc in Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing, MSc in International Marine Biological Resources and MSc in Medical Technologies, Innovation and Development.

The Faculty of Science and Health & Department of Lifelong Learning, Faculty of Business & Hospitality, and Faculty of Engineering & Informatics had courses and programs designed for undergraduate students. Some of the bachelor courses offered by the institute were BA (Hons) in Accounting, BA (Hons) in Animation and Illustration, BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology, BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care, BSc (Hons) in Athletic and Rehabilitation Therapy and BEng in Automation and Robotics. 

Athlone Institute of Technology Accommodations

The Irish Enterprise Award for the Best Student Accommodation Provider Award was given to the Athlone Institute of Technology for three consecutive years. The Wellmount Student Village was a secure and purpose-built student accommodation facility set up by the Athlone Institute of Technology to offer accommodation to its students. 

The apartment complex featured two distinctive room types. It had its own facilities block, launderette, tennis court, basketball court and seminar room. Students were also provided with bicycle stands and parking spots. The student could book these accommodation units through the official online portal of the university. 

Athlone Institute of Technology Scholarships

The Athlone Institute of Technology allowed students to apply for various scholarships. These scholarships mainly were given to students based on their academic performance. Students could also apply for government-funded scholarships besides the scholarships the institution offers. 

The sooner the students apply for these scholarships, the higher the chances of securing them. With the help of these scholarships, many students could look after their educational and living expenses while studying at the institution.

The institute had strong links with several big companies and conglomerations based in the country. Students would be given adequate training and guidance to do well in the interviews they appeared for during the placement season. Many students graduating from the institution would get lucrative jobs through placements every year.
