The overall experience of living and pursuing higher education in the happiest country in the world is unmatched for international students. Colleges and universities in Denmark are stringent about maintaining a superior quality of education.

Exploring Denmark’s Higher Education System

Denmark is home to several prestigious institutes where students from different countries pursue their coveted degree programs. Aside from advanced education systems, state-of-the-art facilities, and excellent career opportunities, the quality of life in this nation is very high. Obtaining a degree from a Danish higher education institute helps one pursue a lucrative career.

Every prestigious college and university in Denmark offers diverse, high-quality degree courses and ensures high-quality teaching. These institutes prioritize providing all sorts of personal development opportunities to domestic and international students. The study in Denmark can be an experience of a lifetime, which is why many higher education aspirants from India and other nations choose it.

The Danish higher education system adheres to the two-cycle model – undergraduate degree programs (Bachelor’s) and postgraduate degree programs (Master’s and Doctorate/PhD). Such a system caters to fostering the mobility of international students within European nations.

The categorization of Danish higher education institutions is based on the field of teaching as well as the level of study.

Many institutes offer short-duration pre-bachelor courses – Academy Profession degrees. Colleges offer professionally oriented courses (3-4 years duration) equivalent to bachelor’s degree programs.

Universities offer a range of long-duration degree programs that are multi-faculty or specializations in varying fields, including technology, engineering, and business.

Danish universities of the arts are renowned for offering long-cycle programs. The Ministry of Culture regulates these programs, which include music, dance, visual arts, media, and films.

Here are the popular degrees available to domestic and international students in Denmark.

Academy Profession Degree: Many Indian students and those from other countries, besides the native students, obtain this degree before studying for a bachelor’s. The duration of the study depends on the amount of European credits a student requires. The majority of courses are centered on science, industries, and businesses.

A student with an Academy Profession Degree gets at least three months of work placement. Many who study in Denmark choose to complete the Academy Profession Degree course within 1.5-2.5 and obtain a bachelor’s degree within another 1.5 years.

Professional Bachelor’s Degree: Students in Denmark require 3-4 years to complete a professional bachelor’s degree course. However, the duration depends on the program they select. This degree is ideal for vocational professions.

All courses include a mandatory period of training for at least six months. Qualifying to pursue a master’s degree course requires a student to hold a bachelor’s degree in a similar field of study. Bachelor’s programs include a bachelor’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in the arts.

The former takes three years for a student to complete. A graduate receives the degree only after obtaining 180 ECTS. A Danish higher education institute awards this degree in all fields or disciplines except for liberal arts. The latter is a qualification in solely fine arts, including music, design, etc. Indian students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in film receive the award after four years of obtaining 240 ECTS.

Master’s Programs: One can pursue one of these programs only after receiving a bachelor’s degree. The three prominent categories include:

  • Postgraduate Diploma Degree: This postgraduate degree is similar to the diploma degree. Students who pursue this degree prepare themselves for occupational functions. One who qualifies for this degree has to have a bachelor’s in the relevant field of study and two years of work experience.
  • Master’s Degree: The duration of a master’s degree is two years, and one needs to obtain 120 ECTS to get the coveted master’s degree. Programs such as veterinary or general medicine take 2.5 to 3 years to complete.
  • Master’s Degree in the Arts: Indian students and those from different nations who study in Denmark and complete a bachelor’s degree in the arts qualify for this degree. The duration of this master’s degree is 2-3 years, and one needs to secure anywhere between 120 and 180 ECTS.
  • Doctoral/Ph.D. Programs: Ph.D. students undertake and conduct a research project independently. Students need to hold a master’s degree in the relevant subject matter. The duration of a Ph.D. or doctoral course is three years. A Ph.D. is the highest level of academic degree that a student obtains.
