The University of Göttingen, officially known as the Georg August University of Göttingen, is a public research university based in Göttingen, Germany. The university was established in 1734 by George II, who served as the King of Great Britain and was the Elector of Hanover. Right from the time it was established, the university was designed to create awareness around the principles of the European Enlightenment.

For the longest time, the University of Göttingen had the patronage of the German Universities Excellence Initiative. The university is also a distinguished member of the U15 Group, which consists of leading research universities in Germany. University of Göttingen Highlights

  • At its establishment, the University of Göttingen had a fencing house and a riding hall. During this time, the courses and programs were taught to students in the Dominican monastery and the Paulinerkirche. Sometimes, students would be taught in the residences of the professors.

  • From the beginning, the university was known to encourage a free-spirited attitude among students and foster an environment of scientific research and exploration. 

  • In 1812, the University of Göttingen was acknowledged as a bona-fide global research institute. By then, the university had already set up a library consisting of over 200,000 volumes of books. 

  • The university initially gained prominence for its Faculty of Law, which attracted several bright individuals who went on to have significant accomplishments in the future. One such student was Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich, who served as the Prime Minister of Austria in the 1800s. In a few years, the university was being referred to as the ‘University of Law’ as more than half of the individuals studying there happened to be law students. 

  • As the 20th century arrived, the University of Göttingen reached its peak. During this period in history, the university focused on subjects like mathematics and natural science. In mathematics, no other university in Germany enjoyed the reputation that the University of Göttingen did.

  • From 1903 onwards, the university witnessed several luminaries joining it as professors and imparting the kind of quality education to students that truly made this university one of the best. For the next two decades, disciplines like aerodynamics and fluid mechanics saw good growth coming their way owing to the kind of research professors and students of the University of Göttingen did on them.

University of Göttingen Admissions

  • A student of any nationality can apply for a course or program offered by the University of Göttingen. The application process that has to be followed by an international student is the same as what a domestic student is required to follow. International applicants, however, have to be considerate of some additional requirements.

  • An international student aspiring to study in Germany can apply for a course or program the University of Göttingen offers by visiting its official online portal. They have to pay an application fee of 65 EUR during the application process.

  • While applying for a course at the University of Göttingen, an international student must submit several documents. Apart from their university entrance qualification result, they would have to submit their score on the English language proficiency test they appeared for. If the student plans to enroll themselves in a course that will be taught in German, they have to show their score on the German proficiency test they appeared for. 

  • Along with a well-written resume, the applicant must submit a motivation letter. If the student is under 18, they will be required to produce a letter of consent signed by their parents. 

  • The academic records have to be in proper order, and a statement of purpose must also be presented. A reference letter would increase the applicant's chances of admission to the university. Submitting a financial guarantee proof is as important as presenting a copy of their passport. 

University of Göttingen Programs

  • The University of Göttingen offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate-level programs as an open research university. The university also facilitates a student exchange program that provides students the platform to gain exposure to a curriculum they haven’t been exposed to before. At the moment, the university has 47 research centers. 

  • The university has multiple departments, including the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Linguistics, and Faculty of Theology. The university also boasts of a scientific center where several laboratories are situated. 

  • Many other prominent institutes and centers in the university include the Diversity Research Institute, Center for Medieval and Modern Studies, Center for Computational Sciences, and Center for Molecular Biosciences. Center for Empirical Research and Center for Gender Studies.

University of Göttingen Accommodations

  • The University of Göttingen’s primary campus is based in Wilhelmsplatz. Along with the University of Göttingen, the campus comprises multiple non-university local research centers and the University Medical Center. 

  • While the University of Göttingen does not offer accommodation facilities, the administration assists students while looking for suitable accommodation facilities for themselves. Apart from dormitories, students can also look for private rooms in apartments. 

  • Student dormitories, of course, prove to be the most affordable option. With a 200 – 300 EUR budget, internationals can secure a place for themselves in a safe and well-organized dormitory. While a shared flat would lead to a student spending 300 – 450 EUR monthly, renting a studio apartment would cost 400 – 600 EUR monthly.

  • If an international student has applied for a short-term course or a program that would last only a few months, they can look for accommodation in a hostel. Hostels with single-room, double-room, and other options can be found easily in Göttingen.

University of Göttingen Cost

  • The tuition fee charged by the University of Göttingen changes almost every semester. The amount of money a student has to pay also depends on the course they have opted for. At the moment, the average semester fee charged by the university is around 380 EUR.

  • While studying at the University of Göttingen, an international student has to include living expenses as a part of their budget. 700 – 750 EUR would be the cost of living for an international student studying at the University of Göttingen. This includes the money that would be spent on books, accommodation, health insurance, and several other expenses.

University of Göttingen Scholarships

Unlike most universities in Germany, the University of Göttingen does not provide scholarship options to its international students. However, international students can secure a scholarship by applying to different agencies and institutions. 

  • RISE Germany: RISE, or Research Internships in Science and Engineering, is an institution that awards scholarships to research interns from other countries to conduct their research or study in Germany. Those who get this scholarship are entitled to receive an amount of 750 EUR. 

  • EPOS DAAD Scholarship: This particular scholarship is offered to international students planning a postgraduate course related to developing a specific field or discipline. 

  • Heinrich Boll Scholarship: The Heinrich Boll Scholarship has been designed for international students who wish to participate in research programs. While students pursuing their masters are awarded a sum of 800 EUR, students who are a part of bachelor programs are given 1,000 EUR.

University of Göttingen Placements

  • The University of Göttingen has set a benchmark for German universities regarding offering placement opportunities to students. The university has a dedicated Career Service department that works towards providing the kind of guidance to students that would help them secure good jobs during the placement season.

  • The university organizes a career fair in the form of PraxisBörse in which a large number of companies visit the campus seeking interns, trainees, and employees for their organization. The university also has a dedicated job portal called Stellenwerk, through which students can apply for jobs offered by different German companies.
