Based in Orebro, Sweden, the Orebro University is a state university that opened its doors to students for the first time in the year 1977. While it was set up as a standalone state college in the year 1977, it was given the status of a university in 1999. Initially, the educational institution specialized in certain courses. With time, three existing colleges, namely the teaching seminar, social work college and sports college, were integrated into the university.

Once Orebro University was given the status of a university by the Government of Sweden, it emerged as the 12th university in Sweden. In the year 2010, the university got further prominence when it was given the right to hand over medical degrees jointly with Orebro University Hospital. According to the US News, Orebro University ranks 301 on the list of the best global universities in Europe. On the list of the best global universities in Sweden, it ranks 11.

At any given point in time, Orebro University provides education to around 16,000 students. While the number of academic staff is close to 1000, the total number of individuals in the administrative department is around 500.

Since the campus is located in a central part of the city, students get access to all kinds of facilities and amenities easily. Within the boundaries of the university itself, students have a library, gym, cafes, and eateries to go to.

Orebro University Admissions

To apply for any of the courses or programs offered by Orebro University, an international student has to visit its official portal universityadmissions.se. The application fee, regardless of the course the student applies for, is 900 SEK.

Every year, the online portal of the university starts accepting applications around mid-October. Students are allowed to submit their application till mid-January. Sometimes, the deadline is extended up to February. By April, the student is notified whether they have been selected or not. If selected, they will have to pay the application fee by the end of April. The autumn semester starts in the month of August.

Like any other university, the Orebro University has its set of academic requirements which students are required to follow. Before applying for any course, an international student must remember that they need to have an undergraduate degree to their name.

Appearing for exams or tests like the SAT or ACT is not required. GRE and GMAT tests are optional and not mandatory.

Since international students will be taught subjects in English, they are expected to have a good command of the language. Before applying to the university, an international student is required to appear for an English language proficiency test like IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE. A minimum score of 7 bands (IELTS), 100 (TOEFL), and 68 (PTE) is required for one to be eligible to study at the Orebro University.

Orebro University Criteria

One of the most important documents that Orebro University expects international students to submit is an official transcript drafted in English. This transcript should contain the details of all the courses, programs, credits, and grades the student or applicant has received till now.

The documents submitted by the applicant should be in the PDF format. The university does not ask students to submit hard copies.

If an international student wants to take up a music-related course or program offered by the Orebro University, they have to send two recorded vocal or instrumental pieces to exchange@oru.se.

If an international student’s native language is not English, they are expected to appear for one of the English language proficiency tests. The university, however, does not require students to submit any English-level certificate.

While submitting visa-related documents is mandatory, the students must remember that the university will not be offering them any kind of help during the visa application process.

Before flying to Sweden to study at the Orebro University, an international student is required to procure a residence permit.

Orebro University Programs

Orebro University has three different faculties, namely, the Faculty of Business, Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

The university has eight different schools in the form of the Business School, School of Health Sciences, School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science, School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, School of Law, Psychology and Social Work, School of Medical Sciences, School of Music, Theatre and Art and School of Science and Technology.

Orebro University Accommodation

Orebro University provides accommodation facilities for both domestic and international students. While planning to apply for a housing facility provided by the university, you must check the deadlines. Usually, the deadline for students about to join during the autumn semester is April 15. For the spring semester, the deadline is usually October 15.

If an international student does not have a Swedish personal identity number, they can apply for an accommodation facility through the Housing Office of the university. A student suffering from a disability must submit a certificate signed and approved by a medical doctor and the home university before applying for an accommodation facility offered by the Orebro University.

The university provides students with two accommodation options in the form of Corridor style living and Västra Flygeln. Regardless of the type of accommodation facility they opt for, they can be sure about living in a fully furnished setup. In each of the rooms, students would find a bed, armchair, desk, bedside table and chair. Wi-Fi facility is provided in all accommodation units.

Orebro University Scholarships

While studying at Orebro University, non-European students get the opportunity to apply for a variety of scholarships. The scholarships are either offered to students directly by the university or the Swedish Institute.

The university has a policy of offering scholarships only to those who are undergoing a Master’s program. An Orebro University scholarship covers the entire or a part of the tuition fee. However, it does not cover living expenses. An international student can apply for a scholarship by visiting universityadmissions.se. The sooner a student applies for a scholarship, the higher will be their chance of getting it. Students also have the option of applying for scholarships offered by the Swedish government.
